My
Favorite Movies About Bikes Bicycling Bicycles and Cycling
European Road Racing
(by Tim Travis) March 2002
There has not been a good movie made about bicycling for a long time
now. Some of more famous bike movies boosted cycling for years after their release. |
I have to say that the biggest bike movie that affected
my life would have to be Breaking Away.
I grew up in Indiana and attended Indiana University where the famous movie took place and
was filmed. When I was at Indiana University I rode in the Little 500 for four years
and helped get the women's version going by coaching a women's team called
Cycledelics. I was about twelve when Breaking Away
was made and was present at the road race scene. "I was not even close to being
old enough to drive but several of my racing friends were going down to be extras in
the road race scene. The director had all of us ride around a big parking lot so he
could get a look at us. I was told that I looked to young and had to watch them film
on the sideline next to a guy who they said looked to old. When I see that movie I
can recognize several of my old friends in the race scene."
Regardless
of my not being in the movie it really changed cycling for anyone growing up on a road
bike in Indiana. Besides taking place in Bloomington Indiana it was entirely filmed
in Indiana. Some other adolescent roadies and I even took to shaving our legs and
drafting off of Semi-trucks on State Road 37. Those were fun days.
The only movie that I could find about global cycle touring was Around the World
by Bicycle. This movie is very hard to find but I think that Amazon keeps a few
in stock. It is only 30 minutes long but very interesting and inspirational.
It is about three guys who spend six and a half years touring the world. These guys
were so hardcore that they bushwhacked through the Panamanian jungle in order to reach
Columbia. They even crossed the Himalayas in the winter.
