Hiking,
Backpacking, and Trekking in Arizona
Are you starting to think that all we do is bike? Well, while it
is true that we biked a lot we also loved the Arizona wilderness and a
bicycle just can not handle the rough stuff. For a true outdoor
adventure you need to set out on foot
for several days. |
Backpacking, Trekking, or Bushwhacking, whatever you want
to call it, is probably our favorite thing to do besides biking.
You can fit an entire adventure into six days. It is also very cheap
because once you buy your food and leave you (hopefully) do not have
anyplace to spend money. We do not usually have the money
for expensive freeze dried food. We use inexpensive food from the
supermarket or more often we just cleaned out our cupboard. This
unfortunately for us includes heavy cans. We try not to think about it
and just throw it in and try to eat the heaviest stuff first.
We went backpacking while we lived in Arizona every chance
we got. You can backpack any time of year in Arizona. You
have sunny comfortable weather during the winter for spectacular desert
trekking in the lower areas to the south and cool relaxing summer weather in
the high Pine and Aspen country. We have done dozens of such overnight
trips over several years but Arizona holds several lifetimes worth of
backcountry adventure. Just make sure you know how to find the
waterholes and springs.
