Life
in a $500 RV / Camper Motor home Recreational Vehicle Trailer 5th Wheel
(by Tim Travis) March, 2002
It was a beast. It leaked about every kind of
fluid sold at the auto parts store. It cost about US$10 for every
hour we drove but we loved it. It was our 24 ft. 1976 Ford (460)
Class C RV motor home. |
The RV that we owned was a sight to behold. We lived in
it for quite a while when we first moved to Prescott and again before we left for a whole
winter. The RV was bought at about the same time that we met. Some of our
first "dates" were when we met in Grants, New Mexico for some Mountain
Biking. In the summer we would head to higher and cooler ground. In the winter
we would head to the lower deserts and meet friends in the Phoenix area for some road
biking. We drove it to Vegas when we got married and used it to go on countless
short term adventures.
There was the time during the Balloon Festival when we got kicked
out of this RV park when my radiator burst and dumped completely out adding to a growing
pile of black oil leaking from the oil pan. I already had a good puddle of red
transmission fluid that was drawing the golf cart security's attention before the big
green mess gushed out.
Another time my sister and her three young kids stayed with me for a week in Sedona,
Arizona. We parked for free a short distance up Schebly Hill. The RV always
did remarkably well off road and I managed to level it out by driving up on two of
those deep red rocks that are so famous there. We had the best time but one day we
were driving back from Red Rock Crossing when I made a U-turn and bottomed out half way in
the middle of one of the main artery (179). My sister grabbed her toddler and
directed traffic, one lane at a time while I was asking a bunch of guys to help in weak
Spanish to try to push me out. Terry, my sister, directed traffic while holding
Jakie for about 15 minutes until a cop relieved her. She is a tenacious one.
In the end I could only get $500 out of it because of it's condition. |
