Honduras: From the Guatemalan Border to the Nicaraguan Border

Hello everyone!  As you read this Cindie and I are riding through the beautiful Nicaraguan mountains deep in the heart of Sandinista territory.  We have just crossed the border from Honduras a few days ago.  This letter tells the story of our ride through Honduras.  Honduras was an amazing country.  Except for a few touristy places (we did not visit) it is often overlook by foreign travelers.  We felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.  The people in this country were some of the most cheerful and friendly that we have met so far.  Everyone was willing to chat or at least smile and wave at us.  This also made it feel much safer than Guatemala.

Honduras suffered terribly from the 1998 hurricane Mitch.  The scars of that natural disaster were sadly very easy to see as we rode through.  We could not help but feel sorry for some people.  You could tell that their house and farm or business was literally wiped from the earth.  I do not believe that regular working people have insurance in Honduras and many had to completely start over.  Temporary houses, made out of bits of wood, cardboard, and scrap metal we thrown up everywhere.

We have had a bit of trouble with Spanish in Honduras.  They have a very different way of pronouncing Spanish words compared to what we had heard up to this point.  They seem to not pronounce the end of the words.  Most words in a sentence sort of trail off or get omitted all together.  At first we found it very hard to understand and be understood.  As we rode through the country we started catching on to how Spanish is spoken here but our level of understanding was considerably less than the time we spent in Mexico or Guatemala.  To be understood we had to mimic this accent.  This was also frustrating. It was hard to say common words in an understandable way.  One alert fellow even asked if I had learned Spanish in Mexico.   He said that he could tell from my pronunciation.  I always figured that I sounded like I learned my Spanish at Taco Bell.
