NOT JUST ANOTHER CRAZY BORDER CROSSING DAY

We had heard for weeks before entering Costa Rica that the border was a real nightmare.  We were prepared for an all day border crossing, waiting in lines, and untangling red tape.  We had to ride around a bit to get all of our exit stamps to leave Nicaragua.  We then rode up to the Costa Rican Immigration official to get our entry stamps into Costa Rica.  We most dreaded this part.

I found a comfortable place outside the office to sit and watch the bikes and Cindie went in to deal with the red tape.  It was hot.  Anticipating a long wait we made sure that each of us had some water and food.  Cindie disappeared into the busy building and I sat and talked to people.  The very first thing that I noticed about Costa Rica was the absence of pickpockets milling around looking for opportunities.  Instead I found myself talking to a group of Costa Ricans in a motorcycle club who were riding around Central America on their fancy Harley Davidson motorcycles.  The differences in economies between Costa Rica and the countries to the north, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala, were already very noticeable.  These leather clad bikers were very friendly.  I jokingly offered to trade my bicycle for one of their expensive noise makers.  One of the guys even acted like he was considering the trade and walked around my bicycle to inspect it.  He said that he liked the fact that I had more luggage than he did and the lack of licenses plates, police stops, lower maintenance made the deal more appealing.  He finally shrugged his shoulders and said that although he was very tempted he just could not do it.  He said that he would miss the thunder in the tail pipe, the smell of exhaust, and his big belly to much.  Then he immediately pulled his shirt up to expose his prize that must have taken years to grow.  We all had a big laugh.

Before I finished my conversation with the motor bikers Cindie walked out with a big smile on her face.  She said that we were done and ready to go.  I did not believe her because she had only been gone for fifteen minutes and the officials had not even seen me.  They had only seen my passport.  She showed me the stamps and rode to the gate at the border.  The man there took a quick look at the stamps in our passports.  He noticed that we had traveled overland from the USA and asked us how far we were going south.  We enthusiastically answered in unison "Argentina."  He gave us a thumbs up, opened the gate, and down the Costa Rican road we went.
