Cindie Travis, 45, from Prescott, Ariz., with her husband, Tim, 40: “It
started with Tim coming up with a dream to travel around the world. We gave
up our careers, sold our possessions and just started out on our bikes.
We’ve been through Central and South America, China and Southeast Asia, and
now Australia, where the wildlife — platypuses, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils
— is like nowhere else. We’re fully self-contained: tent, sleeping bags,
cook gear; Tim carries a computer and all our electronics. We originally
saved enough money for seven years, at $20 or $25 a day. Now, we basically
are living off the proceeds from selling our book and from the advertising
on our Web site, downtheroad.org. About the time we got to South America, it
turned from a trip into a lifestyle. There is no end in sight. We think of
retiring in an R.V. in the States; we don’t really see staying in one place
as an option. We’re modern nomads, I guess.” As told to Seth Kugel
