Learning Spanish is not absolutely necessary for a bike tour south of the
border. Before I met Cindie I had spent quite a bit of time south of the border
cycling around with out more than a few basic words in Spanish committed to memory.
I really missed out on a lot but actually functioned fairly well. Do not let your
lack of Spanish scare you off from cycling in Latin America. Just go and figure out
how to communicate as you go.
Now that I have committed to at least a couple of years of
cycle touring in Spanish speaking countries I have decided to really try to learn the
language this time. Cindie is a big help. She is very willing to look things
up and then explain it to me. We also attended Casa Mexicana in Guanajuato, Mexico and that
gave me the jump start that I needed. I also can highly recommend two software
titles that helped me immensely. Software can give you the same practice as actually being with Spanish
speaking people. This is hard while traveling because you need to have a computer
with you. Your other options are in the forms of books and flash cards. I have
listed several good titles on each side of this text.
I have found that making and then practicing flash cards is very effective for
me. I have decided that if I am going to the trouble of making my own electronic
flash cards that I would share them with interested surfers. Below is an index of
the card sets that I have made so far. As I find new words that I want to learn I
create new sets of cards. If you check back often you can follow my progress in
learning this beautiful language. I would love to hear from you if you find these
Online Spanish Flash Cards any help or have ideas on how to make them better.
