WRBI Local News: Batesville, Indiana, USA

Couple Pedal Their Way Across ContinentsCouple Pedal Their Way Across Continents

Couple Pedal Their Way Across Continents

Tim and Cindie Travis have been to four continents and some 23 countriesóand all by bicycle.

The Arizona couple gave up their jobs--he was a teacher and she a geologist -- to see the beauty of the world and its people. They saved up their money and took off eight years ago. The two will share their story tonight at the Batesville library at 7 .

They have made a pitstop in Batesville, visiting Timís sister, Teri Roper.

They finance their adventure with a bit of modern day technology. "We've written two books which are for sale on our website, which is We sell advertising and gear on our website and we started a little book publishing business for our own books."

Their journey continues across the sea to India. They'll leave in March and expect to be there for four to five years.

They'll live in cheap motels there. Sometimes they camp. Weather often dictates where they will ride.

The scenery, of course, is a highlight of their journey, but itís actually the people they meet that keeps them trekking. Tim Travis said, "What we're after is just seeing how people live and appreciating all the different ways. I don't think you appreciate your own  country until you have seen it from abroad."
The 43 year old  says North America has the friendliest people.

The worst place to bike are the big cities because of the traffic.

The touring bikes they use are heavier, with a longer wheel base and lower to the ground, more like mountain bikes. Itís like a one ton pick up  bicycle, Travis said. And howís the biking in Indiana? "Very nice, and Batesville is superb for biking on the roads. The drivers are nice to us and everything."
