printed and other uses  - FAQs

This page is only for online web site owners who wish to use our photos in exchange for specific link and text credit requirements under every photo.  If you would like to use our photographs for any other use including noncommercial, commercial, electronic presentations, and all printed applications like books, magazines, and newsletters please go to our photo use license page.  Users of content from DownTheRoad.org must have in their possession a license.  Please keep your license on file in your personal records in case there are questions in the future.

A small effort today will prevent an expensive legal problem later.

It is illegal to copy photos from our web site, for any reason, without obtaining permission.  With advances in copyright infringement technology the internet or Library of Congress may be regularly searched for content from our web site.  Once we find an online publication using our images without legal permission we enforce international copyright laws to the full extent.  When caught, it is common for the offending web site owner to remove the image from their web site and claim it was never there.  However, they do not realize that web pages on the internet are archived frequently and provides a permanent record of their crime.  We pursue payment in the form of back royalties, damages and other compensations from the illegal user.  This is an unpleasant but lucrative way to earn funds from our web site content.  It is also totally unnecessary.

Webmasters and Web Site owners only continue below
(Other publishers continue here)

To legally use our photographs on your web site with a free license you need to follow the steps below and send a permission request email with the correct information and we will send you a license agreement in return.

Free online image use directions.

Step 1.  Read, understand, agree to, and follow the Free Web Site Photo Use Requirements.

Step 2.  Locate the image you wish to use on DownTheRoad.org.  (See our  FAQs for Photographic Use page for search tips and assistance.)

Step 3.  Save our image to your web server so it loads from your web server when your web page is opened by surfers on the internet.  Never repeatedly load an image from our server on your web site, this is called bandwidth theft.  Bandwidth theft is illegal and easy to track through our server logs.

UnderstandAfter the permission request email is sent we grant you temporary permission to use our photo on your web site for 30 days while it is being inspected.  After this grace period has expired you need to have in your possession an "Online Publication License" for legal permission to use our photo.  If you have not received this license in your email within 30 days you do not have permission to use it and you must remove our photo from your web site.

Step 4.  Place the image you wish to use on your web site with the exact required caption and text link "Photo provided by www.DownTheRoad.org the Ongoing Global Bicycle Touring Adventure" as it appears in the image use example below. This linked caption must be directly under each and every photo used.  In order to use our photo legally this text must be clearly readable, no less than 10 points type and, no attempts to hide or obscure this text in any way.

The entire caption must be linked to www.DownTheRoad.org as it appears in the photo use example below.  This means that when an internet user clicks on this text they are taken directly to our web site.  Any image taken from DownTheRoad.org without the proper caption and link will be considered illegal and dealt with accordingly.

If you are unwilling or unable to provide the exact required caption and text link as it appears in the Photo use example below you can purchase an affordable photo use license.  For a small fee of US$10 we grant permission to use our photo without a caption, link, or other credit for the life of the purchaser.

Step 5.  In the permission request email include the exact URL where you have placed our photo on your web site so we can click it and go directly to the page with our photo.   If this URL does not take us directly to your web page with our photo you request will be refused and our photo must be removed from your web site.  This URL will be inspected periodically to check if the terms of the agreement are being met. Also include your contact information.  Please double check that your email address is correct and working properly.  We will send the final Online Publication License using this email address.

Example:  www.YourDomain.com/PageWithPhoto.html

Name of contact person

Email of contact person
Your email address will not be sold or disclosed

Step 6.  Send permission request email below.  We will inspect your web site through the URL you provided above and when all the conditions of the Free Web Site Photo Use Requirements are met we will use the email address provided above to send you a Photograph Use License for Free Online Web Site Publication which grants you legal permission to use the photograph on your web site.

Every couple months after you have received your permission we will inspect your web site to ensure the Free Web Site Photo Use Requirements are being met.  If your photo use is in compliance you will not hear from us.

After the permission request email is submitted below we grant you temporary permission for 30 days to post our photo while it is being inspected.  After this grace period has expired you need to have in your possession an "Online Publication License" for legal permission to use our photo.  If you have not received this license in your email within 30 days you do not have permission to use it and you must remove our photo from your web site.
